Alpaca Value

With their scarcity and excellent fleece, alpacas are quite valuable. Therefore, they have incredible potential for immediate and future return on investment

The approximate 30,000 alpacas registered in the US today developed from a strong foundation of imported alpaca stock. With the focus of the importations on quality instead of quantity, the alpacas in the US are some of the best worldwide.

The immediate return is from profits of alpaca breedings and offspring. Returns can be achieved with specialized farmers who choose to own and maintain their own herds. Or, those who wish not to care for their animals, can pursue an agistment and/or partial ownership to obtain returns. Although the industry is mainly breeding based today, alpaca fiber does produce a cash crop worth approximately $30 to $90 per pound based on the fleece quality, color, and type.

The future investment comes as the US herd size increases large enough to support the textile industry with the alpaca’s exquisite fiber. The alpaca’s fiber is possibly the world’s finest natural fiber. It is typically softer than cashmere, yet warmer than wool.

Alpacas are fully insurable and offer tax advantages, including expense deductions and depreciation. Alpacas are “the world’s finest livestock investment.”
